What is a rosacea tracker?

A rosacea tracker is a structured record of how your skin changes over time, alongside the context that may be relevant — what you ate, drank, how you slept, how stressed you felt, what products you used. Unlike a general journal, a rosacea diary is designed to surface repeated patterns: the National Rosacea Society has recommended daily tracking precisely because individual triggers vary and memory of single events is unreliable evidence.

The key word is repeated. A single bad day does not tell you much. A log that covers many days — including calm ones — gives you something to compare. That is when common rosacea triggers shift from a general list of possibilities to something you can begin testing against your own observations.

What should you track for rosacea?

RosaCue logs seven categories of information each day: skin severity on a five-level scale, symptoms (flushing, redness, bumps, burning, stinging), suspected trigger exposures (alcohol, sun, heat, spicy food, stress, skincare products, exercise, sleep quality), and an optional photo stored only on the device and never added to your camera roll. Each category is logged consistently, using the same definitions across every entry.

That consistency is what makes comparison possible later. A log where "moderate" means something different on Tuesday than it does on Saturday produces patterns that are hard to interpret. A log where the same scale is applied at roughly the same point each day produces evidence you can actually use.

Critically: log on ordinary days as well as bad ones. A log that only captures flare days cannot separate factors that regularly preceded bad skin from factors that were present on both good and bad days. Calm-day entries are the comparison baseline — not filler.

Why logging only bad days can create false patterns

If you only open a tracker when your skin is bad, you accumulate a record of what happened before bad days. That can feel convincing very quickly. But it cannot tell you what happened on the many occasions those same factors were present without worse skin following.

Consider a simple hypothetical. You logged red wine nine times. Worse skin followed the next day on five of those occasions. That may sound like a meaningful pattern — but four exposures were not followed by worse skin. Those four observations are equally important. A diary that only recorded the five bad follow-up days would tell a very different story.

RosaCue requires calm-day data as part of its evidence model. It cannot compute a reliable next-day association without knowing how often the suspected factor occurred without worse skin following. That is not a constraint — it is how the analysis stays honest.

How RosaCue checks next-day patterns

After 14 logged days, RosaCue can begin its analysis. The app compares the days following each logged trigger exposure against your other days — entirely on the device, using only your own data. The specific question it asks is: were days following a logged exposure associated with worse skin the next day, at a rate meaningfully higher than days when that exposure was absent?

The predefined next-day window is an analytical choice, not a biological claim. It gives the analysis a consistent frame of reference. A finding is not surfaced simply because an exposure happened before one bad day — the app applies minimum evidence thresholds before showing any result, and it can withhold a finding rather than force a conclusion when the evidence is not strong enough.

Why sample size and counter-evidence matter

Every finding in RosaCue comes with two numbers you might not expect: how many times the suspected exposure was logged, and how many of those occasions were not followed by worse skin.

Both matter. A pattern seen after 5 of 6 logged exposures is a different kind of evidence from one seen after 5 of 9. The first has very little counter-evidence; the second has a meaningful number of occasions where the exposure occurred without worse skin following. A finding that hides the second number is giving you an incomplete picture.

RosaCue never displays a finding without the sample size and the count of observations that did not fit the pattern. The purpose is not to cast doubt on every result — it is to make sure the result you see reflects the actual strength of your own evidence, not a curated subset of it.

What RosaCue does when there isn't enough data

RosaCue distinguishes between two outcomes that are easy to confuse.

Not enough data — there are too few relevant observations to evaluate the suspected relationship with any confidence. Perhaps you have logged only a handful of days, or the suspected exposure has occurred once or twice. The app will not surface a finding in this state. It will tell you more observations are needed.

Pattern did not clear the threshold — the app had enough observations to evaluate the relationship, checked it, and the pattern did not meet the required evidence level. That is a different conclusion — and a useful one. Tracking has not "failed" because it did not confirm a suspicion. The absence of a surfaced finding is information too.

Your data stays on your phone

RosaCue does not require an account, an email address, or any form of sign-in. There is no backend database for your logs.

Daily entries, notes, and photos are stored only on your device. Photos taken in the app are never added to your camera roll. RosaCue does not upload your raw logs, notes, or photos to RosaCue servers. The core pattern analysis runs locally — your raw data is not sent anywhere for processing.

The one optional exception is the "Explain this" feature, which can rewrite a computed finding into plain language. If you choose to use it, only precomputed statistics are sent — the variable label, effect size, sample size, and counter-example count. One practical point worth noting: because logs are stored locally, exporting your data as a CSV is the most reliable backup method currently available. A CSV export is available from within the app.

What you can take to a dermatologist

A structured rosacea log can make a clinical conversation more specific. Rather than describing your skin from memory — "it seems to flare after wine, but I'm not sure" — you can arrive with a concrete summary. Useful things to bring:

  • Your skin severity history over the logging period
  • Which suspected exposures were present before worse days — and how often
  • Which patterns appeared with enough evidence, and what the counter-evidence looked like
  • Which suspected factors did not clear the evidence threshold
  • Any patterns that were too infrequent to evaluate

RosaCue supports this through a CSV export covering your full log, and you can take screenshots of any screen you find useful. What you bring is your data — the clinical assessment of what it means, and any decisions about managing rosacea flare-ups, belongs with your dermatologist or GP.

RosaCue does not produce a formal clinical report. It does not diagnose rosacea or recommend treatment. Its role is to help you organise your own observations so that the conversation with a clinician can start from something more concrete than memory alone.

How long until I see patterns?

Can I track more than one suspected trigger at a time?

Yes. You log all relevant factors each day, and the app analyses each one separately against your next-day skin severity. The challenge — which is not specific to RosaCue — is that multiple factors often occur together. A stressful week tends to come with poor sleep, disrupted eating, and possibly more alcohol. When factors cluster like this, repeated observations are needed to start separating their individual relationships with your skin. That is inherent to personal N-of-1 tracking, and no app can fully eliminate it.

Can RosaCue account for delayed triggers?

RosaCue's analysis checks a predefined next-day relationship: whether what you logged on a given day is associated with worse skin the following day.
